Read MorePledged to Óðinn; An Interview with Freya Aswynn Fruits of Yggdrasil .:.PLEDGED TO ÓÐINN.:. _ Freya Aswynn (b.1949-) is a shaman, author, rune master and an elder in the Asatru movement. She is most known for her work with the esoteric side of the Elder Futhark, and, despite being an Odinswoman, has done a lot to raise awareness for the importance of other Northern deities, particularly the Goddesses. Music fans might recognize her name and hauntingly powerful voice from collaborations with neofolk artists. In this interview, we touch on the subjects of the runes, Gods & music, as well as Freya’s paintings. ___________________________________________ Heathen Harvest: Hello, Freya, and a warm welcome! You are a well-known character in the runic and pagan circles as well as in the neofolk scene, but as not all of our readers may be familiar with your background, let’s talk a bit of your past. From what I gather, you have been interested in esoteric subjects for as long as you can remember. Do you feel like there was one moment, perhaps more significant than others, that really set you on this path? Freya Aswynn: No, it is something which was always there. Read MoreRunic Divination To be able to to divine with Runes one has to develop a high degree of intuition, as is the case with all other divinations. One must obtain a deep knowledge of the runes, study and think for yourself. Build up an internal database for each and every rune. This has to be done on at least two levels. Firstly, one must read everything one can about runes, but with an critical mind, asking questions all long the way, and referring always back to one’s own understanding. one must make a sympathetic link with the Runes each and everyone of them. As important is, imbuing you subconscious mind with the Runes. A daily meditation on one rune in futhark order, with notes taken of any thought coming up during the meditation will prove most helpful; it will lay the basis in twenty-four days for a practical working knowledge of the runes. After this, do the same exercise again but at random. Just pull a rune out of the pouch and observe over the next twenty-four hours any events that take place, no matter how apparently insignificant, which are in keeping with the meaning of the rune. A silly but accurate example would be if the rune is Raido inverted, and the next day you miss the bus! Observe and record simple happenings like this, for future reference....

In Northern Wisdom he has interpreted and updated The Havamal for the twenty first century without compromising the integrity of the original material. Eoghan sets an example of the work needed in this new aeon: Upgrading the Mysteries and giving the gods more bandwidth! I greatly appreciate the discussion on the often referred to phrase in The Havamal – “common sense”. Here it is explained in terms of ‘natural’ inborn intelligence. This is in contrast with the current meaning of the phrase as ‘acceptable conventional’ values, often derived from other peoples opinions. I have always lived as much as possible in accord with The Havamal. This is a most usefull book to adapt ones modern worldview to the traditional values expressed in The Havamal.
